Not only was Rachel proficient in dealing with patients, but she also communicated exceptionally well with their families, putting them at ease. Her professionalism, combined with a personable approach, made me feel more comfortable on the unit. I observed her natural leadership qualities, as many staff members turned to her when issues arose.
I just graduated from nursing school and accepted a position in the ICU. Since I hadn't worked in the ICU before, I decided to do a shadow shift, particularly in cardiac, to observe and learn how transplants/recovery operates. Walking onto the floor and experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells (though definitely not tasting) was quite intimidating until I met Rachel. Rachel is undoubtedly familiar with the unit and especially adept at caring for heart patients. I was thoroughly impressed with her actions. From a new grad's perspective, what stood out the most was her willingness and openness towards me. Although I couldn't grasp everything immediately, she patiently explained her actions, the reasons behind them, what to expect, and key monitoring aspects. In those 8 hours, I learned a tremendous amount, and I can't thank Rachel enough for welcoming me into her space. She truly embodies the Ascension Mission, Vision, and Values. Caring for someone whose life is in your hands is daunting, but having a mentor like her, willing to teach, guide, and answer even the simplest questions, builds the confidence needed to succeed. Rachel, I thoroughly enjoyed your guidance in caring for heart patients. I'll always remember your kindness and acceptance towards me and the patients' families. You've left a lasting impression, and I aspire to be half as wonderful as you.
