Megan, the ED nurse who took care of me for most of the day, was nothing short of fantastic. Meg is the very heart of nursing. She could not have been kinder, nicer, and more attentive. For example, she told me everything they were going to do and what to expect. She explained that things would move quickly, and she would make sure to keep me updated on changes. When my ED MD came back to tell me that I had bilateral pulmonary emboli, Meg was there and she put her hand on my shoulder, and when the doctor left, she said, "OK. That's some news! I'm sure they'll want to get you started on blood thinners, so let me go consult, and let's get your body on its way to healing. I know this isn't what anyone wants. You're going to recover from this because you are here getting the right care. Let yourself be angry, but move to that space of healing and focus on that." Wow! Literally, I shifted. Right words at the right time. She cared in a way that aligned with everything I felt about being a nurse. Nursing is a calling, and nurses like Meg, who value it as a meaningful profession and want to make a difference, are part of the energy and play into it. She cared for me holistically, from my head to my feet. She is so worthy of what this award stands for and means.
