He sat with the terrified girl and told her about his hometown in Eastern Europe. At that moment, an invisible wall came down, and an instant bond was created.
Adrian is one of the most dedicated and hardworking nurses in the Psychiatry unit. Whenever there is a crisis or acuity in the unit, he is always one of the first to rush in and help out.
There was a teenage female patient who had recently immigrated from an East European country, who couldn't speak English and was terrified to be in the hospital. She hardly talked to anyone, whether a nurse, tech, or doctor. She was admitted for first-break psychosis and had been prescribed antipsychotics for the first time in her life, receiving several doses in a short time. She developed an acute dystonic reaction to her medication while seated in the day hall of the Psych unit. Adrian was by her side almost immediately, even though she wasn't Adrian's assigned patient. He made sure she wouldn't fall and gave her the appropriate antidote to the dystonic reaction. Then, he went above and beyond for the patient. He sat with the terrified girl and told her about his hometown in Eastern Europe. At that moment, an invisible wall came down, and an instant bond was created. She had found one person at this strange place to whom she could relate, and she visibly relaxed and smiled. She spoke to Adrian, slowly and softly, in broken English. Until she fell asleep from her sedative medicine, Adrian was with her, talking to her and supporting her. This act of genuine kindness made the greatest difference to the patient in her entire hospital stay.
