He is a very hard-working individual, exceptionally talented, creative, and full of positive energy. He works to serve his fellow clinical colleagues, veterans, their families, and caregivers.
It is with the highest level of enthusiasm that I nominate Mr. Ronald Ramirez, FNP-BC to receive the Daisy Nurse Leader Award. In his current role, Ron stands alone among his peers in his professional manner and attitude. Ron is the only Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) Coordinator, Nursing Automated Data Processing Application Coordinator, and Informatics Coordinator at HVHCS, since June 2019. He is the Point of Contact for the hospital’s Bed Management System (BMS) and Biopoint (wristband maker); Program Manager for Acustaf; Nursing contracting officer; and member of the health system’s Nurse Professional Standards Board (NPSB).
Ron strives to create an environment where attributes of trust, compassion, mutual respect, continued professional development and ethical behavior are modeled and supported to provide the best quality care to our veterans. As BCMA Coordinator, Ron facilitates training, installation, implementation, maintenance, and overall use of BCMA and nursing-related applications throughout 2 medical centers.
Ron is always accessible and responsive to the clinic teams. For example, Ron conducts weekly rounds on the inpatient and outpatient units, performing software and equipment checks ensuring medication carts are performing reliably. He critically apprises and troubleshoots BCMA software or user issues. For example, during weekly rounds, Ron encounters an average of 6-8 out-of-service med carts a month between both campuses, which is approximately about 80+ incidents a year. Troubleshooting during rounds decreases turnaround time between work orders to IT and Biomed which can take an average of 2-3 days.
Ron’s attention to detail during environmental rounds eliminates the stress on the staff of having to troubleshoot or replace carts during a med pass and ensures Veterans receive medication on time. Identifying and addressing deficiencies on the medication carts reduces medication errors and improves the overall quality of care delivered to our Veterans. This was particularly helpful during COVID when Biomed and IT staff were limiting their presence on the unit due to quarantine restrictions.
In his role as Nursing Automated Data Processing Application Coordinator and the Nursing Informatics Coordinator, Ron advocates for nursing and ensures that all staff has the appropriate level of access to clinical applications. In this role, he collaborates with the VA Office of Information and Technology to ensure all new nurses and current nursing staff have the appropriate level of access to clinical systems and applications. In 2021, Ron oriented and assisted in on-boarding more than 80 Nurses and Nursing Assistants during the COVID pandemic. He maintains confidentiality of all patient and staff information in all verbal, electronic, and printed communication. He also is the Chair of the BCMA Committee and a member of several committees at HVHCS. As a civil service employee and a nurse, Ron is a leader and subject matter expert in his role.
He is a very hard-working individual, exceptionally talented, creative, and full of positive energy. He works to serve his fellow clinical colleagues, veterans, their families, and caregivers. Ron has all the interpersonal qualities and the intellectual characteristics of the ideal recipient of a Daisy Nurse Leader Award.
