On Thursday, our son was born. Our birth story was similar to most other scheduled c-section births, except that our son was anencephalic. Leading up to that day and even after his birth, we had no idea how much time we would have with him. To the surprise of everyone, he survived birth, and continued to defy the odds with every passing hour. When that evening came, we were introduced to our night nurses, Nicolette Krommes was one of them. She had no idea what the night was going to entail at the start of her shift. She greeted me, my husband, and our son with compassion and thanked us for the honor of being a part of our care team. She was in our room every 30 minutes to check on my son and me. She responded to every call I had and actively listened to every concern and supported me every way she could. Throughout the night she became part of our family. We all shared stories that made us laugh and cry throughout the night. At 2am when I called because our son was in distress, Nicolette rushed in to make sure everything was okay. She worked with us and the NICU team to make sure my son was comfortable. Later that night, our son passed in our arms. We called for Nicolette, and she came to check his heart. She was there with us when the NICU Doctor confirmed his heart had stopped. The love, compassion, empathy, and support that Nicolette showed us during one of our most difficult journeys was truly a testament to her passion for nursing and dedication to patient care above all else. She will forever hold a special place in our hearts and when we look back at those few hours we had with our son, we will remember just how amazing they were!
