This is not a story, but an overall impression of what a caring nurse should be all about. Her name is Melissa Dillon and she was my husband’s nurse. I wish everyone could have a nurse like Melissa! Upon introducing herself to this elderly couple, I knew she was special. She immediately made us feel less afraid in this unfamiliar environment. She was warm and started talking to both of us asking about relatable subjects that are easy conversation starters. “Where are you from? How did you meet?” Conversations that steered our minds into gentler spots. She saw my husband as a whole person, not just another elderly person with medical issues. She was a great communicator, explaining processes and procedures in layman terms. Her way of giving us information was accurate and reassuring. Melissa was very dependable and kept her word. She would find things out for us and come back when she said she would. She also suggested ways to be more comfortable in the room. Melissa was a great patient advocate. She understood our situation and empathized and supported us however she could. She knew that getting my husband back to his assisted living facility on time was really important to us. She called the medical transport company a few times on our behalf (yet on her own initiative) to give us updates on their arrival. That meant a lot! I cannot say enough good things about Melissa. Everyone deserves a nurse like her!
