Voughn and the other student had the babies swaddled in their arms and rocking them in the chair. When I walked into the nursery and saw this, I almost cried. This is exactly what those babies needed. They needed to feel comfort.
Voughn Presquito was assigned time in the Special Care Nursing during clinical. He was to help care for twin babies that were born prematurely, as well as being addicted to drugs at birth. They were going through withdrawal symptoms. Parents of the babies had lost rights to the babies who would soon go into foster care. Voughn and another student demonstrated complete compassion and caring behaviors toward these babies. They did all the cares that were necessary: complete physical assessments, and took part in bottle feeding and tube feedings. They were 110% interested in learning how to give the best care to the babies. What I found most heartwarming was that after assessments were completed, Voughn and the other student had the babies swaddled in their arms and rocking them in the chair. When I walked into the nursery and saw this, I almost cried. This is exactly what those babies needed. They needed to feel comfort. They need to experience touch. Especially when going through withdrawal. Voughn and the other student demonstrated what a nurse really is and something like this isn't taught in a book. It is a trait that a person simply just has. The RN in the nursery was so impressed with these young men. Very proud moment as an instructor!!
