Donita Wilkins was not intimated, as she addressed the patient face to face and communicated to the patient in a calm manner, setting boundaries.
This Nurse has represented the essence of being a Patient Advocate, Knowledgeable Clinician, Nurse Preceptor, and Team Player. There was a patient diagnosed with diabetes with chemical dependency & Behavioral Disorder, who was very difficult to communicate with and, at times, refused to have the nurses assist. This patient had a broken leg and wounds. One day, this patient was found on the floor in a pool of blood with the bone sticking out of their leg, as they attempted to get out of the bed without calling for assistance. Many of the nurses were reluctant how to communicate with the patient because the patient was telling the nurses to leave her alone and using foul language. Ms. Wilkins went to speak with the patient and was able to delegate to the team how they would communicate and provide care to the patient, as some of the other nurses were not able to manage. Donita Wilkins was not intimated, as she addressed the patient face to face and communicated to the patient in a calm manner, setting boundaries. The nurse was able to clean the patient and notify the MD team and her fellow Nurses in such a way that the patient followed all the Nurse's instructions, and when the medical team arrived, they were even impressed by the calmness of the patient. The surprise was when the Patient told the this Nurse. “Thank you for caring and having patience with me. I have trust issues”. This is why this Nurse deserves this honor. There are many other incidents that I can’t name on this form. This Nurse would be able to take care of me at any time if I ever needed one.
