Despite a scary diagnosis, Carolyn cheered me up and made me smile
Carolyn was nominated twice for a DAISY Award this month.

Department leadership nominated Carolyn for patient advocacy. Recently, a patient in pre-op had an unfortunate interaction with a surgeon that left the patient scared and tearful. Carolyn took the time to sit with the patient and her mother to listen to their concerns. An alternate surgical plan was developed, and the patient underwent surgery with a different surgeon. After surgery, Carolyn provided care in the PACU. She pulled up a chair and listened to the patient and her mother. “She treated this young lady and her mother as if they were family.”

The second nomination was received from a patient who stated that she received “incredible care in recovery”. She said that although the entire staff was amazing, she wanted to especially recognize Carolyn (June is her middle name). The patient said that Carolyn saw her through the entire process. The patient felt that Carolyn went above and beyond, exceeding her expectations. She said that Carolyn was “right by my side when I woke up. She made sure that I had no pain and even hand-fed me ice chips.” The patient was impressed that they “chatted, shared our favorite music—she even sang me songs.” Despite a scary diagnosis, Carolyn “cheered me up and made me smile. Her kindness will always stand out to me. Please give her my heartfelt thank you.”
(Note: the patient signed her name, “Soon to be a breast cancer survivor”.)

Carolyn, thank you for the incredible, meaningful difference you make to your patients every day!
