There are so many qualities that make up a great nurse - medical knowledge, communication skill, and, of course, their 'bedside manner.' In my stay, I had no fewer than six nurses. They were all terrific and gave me a sense of confidence and security in a time of pain, discomfort, and sometimes disorientation. Like all of my nurses, she executed her tasks with precision and care. But it was her 'bedside manner' that set her apart. If there is an art to nursing, it might be in this. Flor seemed to read her patient (me) and my situation and respond with something other than the obligatory, upbeat, smiling demeanor - she could be matter-of-fact when there was no room for sugar coating - smiling when she knew I could benefit from a 'ray of sunshine' - and deeply compassionate when she sensed a moment of real human connection. She never crossed the line of professionalism but somehow offered something above and beyond the expected tasks of a caring nurse. Flor is an Extraordinary Nurse.
