Carolyn Germaine has been a nurse leader at Mather Hospital for many years; first as an assistant nurse manager on 2 south Oncology, then transferring to 3 South, and eventually finding a true passion and a home as the Director of the TCU.

Carolyn demonstrates acts of caring and compassion every day to the patients on the Transitional Care Unit (TCU), their caregivers and families, and all the staff that she encounters.  Carolyn is known for her amazing chocolate chip cookies, which bring smiles to the staff during meetings and celebration events.

Carolyn has effectively maintained successful DOH surveys throughout her tenure of leading the TCU, resulting in a five-star rating by CMS. The TCU was also provided a rating of “High Performing” by US News and World Report’s 2022- 2023 Best Nursing Homes. As Carolyn continuously strives to exceed the benchmark and meet the needs of the community, she leads by example and sets the example for the staff to follow.

Recently, Carolyn added to the expectations and requirements of her role. Carolyn is now the Program Director for the Nurse Aid Training Program.  Within one short week, she assumed the responsibility of the program, and readily accepted the challenges and learned about the multifaceted program while maintaining excellent patient outcomes in the 16-bed TCU.  Carolyn seeks to ensure that she establishes a department where trust, compassion and mutual respect exist. She is an active problem solver and encourages her team members to utilize a spirit of inquiry and critical thinking.

Carolyn is a DAISY Nurse Leader for her ongoing effort to ensure staff safety, quality patient care, management of human and fiscal resources, maintaining and ensuring team resilience, and always meeting team members with compassion and humanity.
