Her passion for addressing health disparities and promoting culturally sensitive care has set a new standard for excellence in Indigenous maternal health services.
I am pleased to nominate LCDR Carpitcher for the PHS DAISY Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to advancing health equity in Indigenous maternal care. She has demonstrated remarkable vision, dedication, and initiative in spearheading the implementation of the TeamBirth maternal health equity initiative at Cherokee Nation Hastings Hospital in March 2023. LCDR Carpitcher's leadership and advocacy have been instrumental in achieving the recognition of being the first tribal hospital to implement the TeamBirth initiative, which is derived from a partnership between Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham & Women's Hospital, OK Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative, and the OK State Dept. of Health. Her passion for addressing health disparities and promoting culturally sensitive care has set a new standard for excellence in Indigenous maternal health services. Further, her experience led to her being published in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN) in July 2023. In her article, she addressed the critical issue of maternal mortality and morbidity among Native American women. Her findings served as a catalyst for identifying the urgent need for targeted interventions to address the unique health needs of Native American women and to mitigate the impact of health equities that place them among the worst maternal mortality rates in the country. Her work not only raised awareness but also provided valuable insights into the implications of initiatives like TeamBirth for all Indigenous-serving hospitals. LCDR Carpitcher's commitment to advancing health equity exemplifies her leadership, expertise, and dedication to effecting positive change in maternal care.
