At the age of 24 I found out I had cancer. I was in the middle of my graduate program for occupational therapy and was terrified. Although I am going into the healthcare field, I have never been very good with needles. During the morning of my surgery, I was extremely nervous and very scared. A nurse came in to insert an IV and my vein collapsed. I was instantly crying and nervous for him to try again. At that moment, Nuala came in and instantly made me feel better. She calmed me down with some breathing exercises and told funny stories to make me laugh. In a moment when I was so terrified and fearful of what was to come, she made me feel safe and eased my worry. She stayed in the room with me and my parents until it was time for me to head into the operating room. When I woke up, I thought that I would not see her again, as I was in a different section of the hospital, but later that day Nuala came in to check on me. When she walked in I had the biggest smile on my face as I was so excited to see her! Nuala calmed me down, was there for me during my time of need, and went above and beyond what was required of her. I am extremely grateful that Nuala was my nurse that day!
