Lilia was an amazing advocate for my son when she was caring for him. He presented to the ED at one week old, having trouble breathing and feeding. As a mom and also a nurse, I knew something was not right. I immediately felt dismissed by the doctors caring for my son, but Lilia made me feel heard and validated. She took the extra step to look further into my son’s poor blood flow in his feet by doing 4 extremity blood pressures and immediately noticed that his right arm was significantly elevated, an indicator that there may be a bigger problem than just his prematurity impacting his breathing. She brought this to the attention of both doctors and was very persistent in advocating for me and my son, making me feel heard as a mom. She continued to validate my “gut feeling” and was incredibly supportive as she encouraged me to continue advocating for my son throughout his hospitalization. It was that empowerment that helped me continue to push for testing that may have saved my son’s life! Within three days of being admitted they discovered a cardiac defect that required quick intervention and surgery just a few days later. Without Lilia being the incredible advocate that she was and taking the time to listen to me about my concerns, I do not know that it would have been caught as quickly. Our family is so grateful for her
