Each time she entered my room, her presence created an atmosphere of steady calm and reassurance.
From the moment I arrived in the ICU Unit, I felt I was being cared for by a superior team of nurses. Each one listened, provided constancy of care, and not only ensured my every need was met but also anticipated what I might need as my care progressed.
There is one nurse I wish to thank especially. I had the good fortune to have Alyssa Gaynor present for two consecutive day shifts. This meant there was time for her to invest in my care in an especially sensitive, personal, and resourceful manner. Each time she entered my room, her presence created an atmosphere of steady calm and reassurance.
By the second day, my feeling of comfort and safety in her care continued to increase. This was the day that I was beset with a headache of such intensity that my discharge planned for that day was postponed.
"What was causing this intense pain and anxiety?" Alyssa continued to work with me to explore what precipitated my headache distress. Alyssa reassured me she would communicate with the doctor and stepped away for a short while. Soon, Alyssa appeared with the exact information needed to solve the puzzle. Without prompting, Alyssa researched my heart health history from as far back as 2019. She discovered that the very medication I was presently taking in the hospital was exactly the same as that administered to me in 2019. This medication, four years ago, had produced this same extraordinary headache. At that time, I was directed to stop the medication immediately. The mystery was solved by Alyssa's capable and intelligent research, and her commitment to care for me far beyond any expectation. Soon, I was administered morphine – through Alyssa's intercession – and my pain began to subside. I was grateful not only to feel better but also to understand the cause of this distress.
I am home now and full of gratitude for the elite care of Lutheran General's intensive care nurses.
