The patient has improved by leaps and bounds today because of their dedication of Christine. I was floored by the care, compassion, and creativity that this nurse was able to show this patient.
I was an intern on the Trauma service at Cook County, and I'd been assigned to cover the Trauma ICU on call. I've seen the patient JS since she arrived in our trauma bay. She was in a terrible car accident early in the month. The patient is a young mom, and she's had a hard time communicating and adjusting to her new life with a tracheostomy. We've had a hard time this month weaning her from sedation and the ventilator because she gets agitated. Many others have asked to have her back on heavier sedation to prevent agitation. Christine Sokol is different. She has a special touch with these patients. She was easily able to redirect JS when she was agitated. For the first time in a week, we were encouraged by what we saw. Christine made all of this happen.

She was able to calmly settle the patient, and she provided constructive strategies with us to maintain this without sedating medication. We were finally able to have the patient see physical therapy. The patient has improved by leaps and bounds today because of their dedication of Christine. I was floored by the care, compassion, and creativity that this nurse was able to show this patient. After a frustrating week for the patient and slow progress, Christine's hard work today gave our patient hope. There's nothing more meaningful than seeing a nurse build this kind of relationship and help encourage meaningful recovery. She did not have to do everything she did today. She went above and beyond. For that reason, she is a true DAISY Nurse.
