This simple yet very profound act on her part was the biggest and best difference-maker for me. The comfort it provided me was so very special. She was living proof that sometimes we really can experience good things in life when involved in situations that might be considered less than desirable. She was that "Good Thing" for me that day. Just knowing she was close by made everything seem all right.
My wife and I reported to the Cardio Vascular Recovery Unit of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. I was scheduled for an ablation at 7:30 a.m., which would be my sixth ablation in the past almost eleven years. Five of these ablations have now been performed at MUMH. Within a short time of being shown to my room by another staff member, Nurse Julianna Vaeth approached me at the bedside and informed me that she would be caring for me both prior to and immediately after my procedure. In only a matter of minutes of her being in our presence, it became very clear to us that we were extremely fortunate and lucky to have her in charge of my care. We both felt like we hit the "Jackpot" with her as my nurse. Her bedside manner was incredible. She was very professional and very personable. She was friendly and kind, caring and compassionate, and was such a delight to be around. We believed she was the epitome of what the very best nurses would be. She certainly checked all the boxes at the highest level. In drawing a parallel between how she performed at her craft to the way the best athletes perform at their I would definitely describe her as being an "All Star", "Superstar", and "MVP". She was Great!!!
When the time for my procedure came and I was being transported in my bed from the CVRU to the Cath Lab I noticed her at a corner desk some distance away inside the confines of the Nurse's station. She saw me, left her desk, came over to me, offered some comfortable words of support, and shared a "Fist Bump" with me. As I previously mentioned, I had experienced five ablations in the past. The experience of having undergone those prior ablations did not, however, remove from me all reservations and doubts of what I was about to experience with this sixth ablation I was about to undergo. I was, in fact, experiencing some significant apprehension as I was aware of the risks that are always present wherever a procedure of this kind is performed. Those kind words and that "Fist Bump," though, for me, was, as the saying goes, "Just What the Doctor Ordered". They had such a soothing and positive effect on me. Once inside the Catheter Lab as I was transferring from my bed to the Lab table my confidence level became "Sky High". I became very much at ease and felt so reassured that everything would be OK. I have her to thank for that. She could have just stayed at her desk and maybe flashed a quick wave when I was being transported out of the CVRU but instead, as just previously mentioned, she came over to me and offered her support with words and action. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital is very fortunate to have Nurse Julianna Vaeth in its employ. Most importantly, the patients that she serves and cares for at MUMH are the real winners. She is certainly very knowledgeable about and skilled in her profession but what really sets her apart is that "Special Gift" she has to interpersonally connect in such a dynamic way. It is very impressive. She is most definitely a credit to her profession. She is also a credit to MUMH. I am aware that she is studying to become a Nurse Practitioner. There is no doubt in my mind that she is already hugely successful in her current career as a nurse that she too indeed will become equally successful as a Nurse Practitioner. A lot of future patients out there will most assuredly be in Great hands and extremely Happy with her caring for them. My wife and I wish Julianna nothing but the very best as she pursues her next career. We hope that the year of 2023 will provide for her everything she has worked so hard for in both her continuing education to become a Nurse Practitioner while at the same time still highly performing her everyday responsibilities of being a nurse. We hope that the Fruits of her Labor will truly be rewarded.
