The family was able to get all the food, and everything else that was planned for the wedding brought to Zale, and the wedding happened. It happened because Paul made sure that it happened.
Paul took a chance on me and provided me the opportunity to be the Unit based educator for Inpatient rehabilitation-a position that had been vacant for three years. As an outsider coming to UTSW (UT Southwestern Medical Center), Paul was supportive and encouraging, which was much appreciated.

A few months after I started here, the renovation project began at Zale (Zale Lipshy Pavilion). Along the way, Paul has been very supportive of his staff in the many challenges that were coming our way from the closures of the linen chute, closure of elevators and most importantly-with the change in services here at Zale. The biggest one has been the loss of phlebotomy services and the lab. He supported getting all his nurses checked off on drawing labs on a mannequin to boost their confidence, as well as working to get some of his PCTs checked off so that they could help. It was a major culture change that went relatively smoothly due to Paul making sure that we were supported in the change. This included altering the weekly lab schedule to ensure that courier services were available.

The most important reason that I am nominating Paul for this award is for something that happened while I was off. I heard about it from numerous people, so it was obviously something that needed to be shared… add wedding planner to his title. Several people came up to me and said that they were moved to tears when they heard about what he did. Below is what Paul "made happen."

One of our patients had a mother who was supposed to get married in early December. It was all planned to happen....and then she did not want to go through with the wedding if her son was not able to be there. It was a special wedding as well as the two that were getting married (second marriage for both) had met during Covid after both having lost their previous partners.

Mind you that this was happening during renovations at Zale with each day presenting a new problem or issue with things being shut down. This occurred at the time that the cafeteria and kitchen were supposed to be closing for construction. Paul got word that the wedding was going to be cancelled and went into action to make it happen. He was able to get the demolition of the cafeteria walls delayed so that the wedding could take place here at Zale and the patient’s son was able to attend.

The family was able to get all the food, and everything else that was planned for the wedding brought to Zale, and the wedding happened. It happened because Paul made sure that it happened. Paul shared with me the email from the patient's sister about how much it meant to them that the wedding happened and that he was able to be there. Words cannot express what that meant to them.

Paul is a leader who leads by example. When a call for the Rapid Response Team is made, he is usually one of the first ones to arrive. He often is the one who can get a lab drawn after another nurse has tried. He really and truly does support his nurses and encourages them to be the best that they can be. He is a true DAISY Nurse Leader.

Paul has been such a huge advocate for Zale before and throughout the construction. He has anticipated needs and concerns and put in an incredible effort to make sure that we have everything we need to continue to provide excellent care here in Inpatient Rehab. He has kept staff updated and informed about changes and supported the team through all of the little hiccups. His hard work has paid off in the ongoing patient satisfaction we hear about during our rounds every day and in the positive comments from staff.  THANK YOU, PAUL!

I just started UT Southwestern in January of 2023. From my very first day, Paul made me feel welcome and was always coming by to see if I needed help with anything. I had never worked in the medical field before, and he made it a LOT less overwhelming. He is still sometimes the first person I call! Paul is a tremendous leader, and his dedication to his team and to his patients is truly remarkable!
