A nurse’s place is to advocate for their patients, and if you are looking for a true advocate, then look no further because Kathy is a true advocate in my book.
I went to the Emergency Room on New Year’s Day with chest pain. I was admitted for observation but was moved to the ICU on the first day. This was very scary and frightening, not knowing what was wrong with me and also not knowing what to expect. Kathy was my nurse and was there with me for the next 3 days while I was undergoing numerous tests, needle sticks, and not to mention pain. Kathy always worked to get my chest pains under control and even explained any issues or concerns that I didn’t understand. Her knowledge and skill were very evident, but more importantly, her determination to help diagnose what was wrong with me. My doctor had ordered a stress test that basically came back as normal, but I continued to have chest pains. I had shared with Kathy that with my family history of heart problems and continued pain that I wished my doctor would do a heart catheterization to make sure there wasn’t a blockage that was causing this pain. The next time my doctor came into the ICU to make rounds, I overheard Kathy speaking to my doctor about my concerns, continued pain, and desire for a heart cath. A nurse’s place is to advocate for their patients, and if you are looking for a true advocate, then look no further because Kathy is a true advocate in my book. She spoke up for me, and I feel like if she hadn’t done that, then my doctor would not have proceeded with the heart Cath in which he found a blockage in my “widow maker” artery that required a stent. I believe all things happen for a reason, and there was a reason God had Kathy as my nurse that day. He had her there to intercede and advocate for me! I thank God for Kathy and for him allowing her to make a difference in my life and the many other lives that I know she has touched and will touch!
