Katherine Walsh is a beloved float nurse at BIDMC. She always floats to our unit with a smile- no matter what her assignment may be and we're always happy to see her name on our assignment board. On this particular day, she had a heavy assignment, mentally and physically. One of her patients, a 36 year old female, was having a difficult time coping with the unexpected news that she would need an amputation of her arm. As the shift progressed, the patient began to disassociate and spiral in grief, disbelief, panic and was trying to leave AMA. Katherine never faltered. She advocated for this patient, got all the necessary people to the bedside and helped this patient cope with the unimaginable situation. This RN got through to her when no one else could, potentially saving this woman's life. She handled this with such grace, poise and patience. Working alongside her is an honor and we're so proud that our patients get to receive wonderful care from such a special nurse who always has their best interest in mind!
