It is my pleasure to nominate James Abshure for the DAISY Award. Mr. Abshure works as a Nurse Educator. Mr. Abshure has been a nurse for over 20 years and has precepted, mentored, and educated over 1,000 nurses, nursing assistants, monitor technicians, and other healthcare providers. He has prepared so many people at the VA and statewide through the Little Rock Critical Care Program. Mr. Abshure is very engaging and fun, and he uses humor frequently to tell funny stories about his nursing career and help make learning fun. He uses the latest evidence-based practice in his presentations to ensure nurses are knowledgeable. Currently, he is responsible for the RN Transition to Practice Program. It is a one year long program for new graduates to help them during their first year at the VA. Additionally, he teaches charge nurse classes, preceptor proficiency, nursing assistant classes, basic dysrhythmia classes, central nursing orientation, prevention and management of disruptive behaviors, high reliability organizations/quality/patient safety, and Little Rock critical care classes. As you can tell, he is very smart and adaptable to teach so many different topics. When he is not teaching classes, he is creating resource guides and posters for nursing units. He goes above and beyond every single day. He is the most productive nurse educator I have ever seen. He is always willing to help others. He continues to challenge himself 20 years later by continuing to invest time in himself by learning new information. This not only helps him teach our staff, but it ultimately provides better care to our Veterans. During Covid, he went back to the Covid Intensive Care Unit to take care of our Veterans. He spent almost an entire year away from education to help our Veterans and help our critical care nurses. Not only did he leave his job as an educator, but he also worked on night shift. Prior to going to the Covid ICU, he first educated clinic nurses on how to take care of medical/surgical patients. He administered Covid shots to our Veterans and staff members. He provided fit testing and N95 education to our staff members. He has so much compassion toward our Veterans.
