She quickly oriented herself and took control of the situation. For the first time, someone sat down next to me, looked me in the eye, and explained what was happening.
In 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes established The DAISY Award as a very public way to say "Thank You" to the nurses. Today, The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful and compassionate care nurses provide. While this award is typically reserved for nurses currently serving at the bedside, I felt compelled to nominate the Nursing Supervisor, Megan Diem, after our interaction with her in the MICU.

Navigating the current healthcare system is intimidating, especially, under the acute stress of being admitted into the ICU. During my stay, I was confused, scared, and fearful that I would never be able to return home. I did not understand what the doctors were telling me. At one point, hospital security tried removing my family - the people who were there to help guide and support me. The experience was so traumatic, I tried to put on my clothes, pack up my belongings, and go home.

Thankfully, Megan Diem came to the rescue! She quickly oriented herself and took control of the situation. For the first time, someone sat down next to me, looked me in the eye, and explained what was happening. She helped me understand my choices going forward and ensured I was able to make an informed decision about my healthcare.

I wish every nurse shared the courage, and compassion Megan had that day. She truly deserves to be recognized for her actions.
