Our son N was born with a congenital heart defect that required surgical repair. Even though we knew it was coming, by the time he was ready for it at 18 months old, we were both nervous wrecks. The surgery itself was nerve-wracking, and we also faced a hard recovery in the PICU where N could not move around much, was constrained by a chest tube, and had to be on some heavy pain meds. Thankfully, we were given the gift of the most amazing nurse that first weekend - Vy! Vy loved N from the very beginning and treated him like he was family rather than just another patient. They formed a bond, and it was so sweet to see her come into our room just to hang out and talk to him rather than just treat him. She also went above and beyond in checking in on my wife and me and constantly asked if we needed anything. N loves to dance, and Vy would join in during his spontaneous dance parties once he could move more. On her last day on duty, she even invited all of the nurses on the unit to his room for a massive dance party - a memory we will cherish forever!
