When my 9-year-old son with autism came into the ER with high fever and signs of Kawasaki disease, Macie went above and beyond to connect with my son and reassure him, and make him feel comfortable and cared for. She got to know some of his favorite things so she could offer nice things to him for his cooperation with the tests they were performing. He was still scared, so she explained very sweetly and gently all of the procedures and steps that would be taken for a nose swab, blood draw, and IV. She answered all of his questions and even did practice runs and showed him the testing materials so he could be more at ease. She had been so scared that I did not expect him to cooperate (as he never has with other nurses), but in the end, he trusted her and cooperated beyond my expectations. He has never trusted a nurse and cooperated like that! Then, he was so happy to enjoy the jello and iPad that was promised. I came to the ER so nervous and now I feel so confident in the care provided and in the fact that she truly goes above and beyond to connect with and comfort her patients. She even shared with us that she had been scared too as a child, but now, since she had been a nurse for 30 years she knows how to perform tests in the easiest ways! She told us he could wiggle his toes or nose but the rest of him needed to be still like a statue. She also gave him a towel that I could hold up like a curtain so he didn’t have to watch and would be less nervous. She had another nurse come and help as well and she was kind and gentle and helped to hold his arm still but not in a way that upset him. I’m so relieved that He understood, felt safe, and did just what he was supposed to! I recommend the Williamson County Hospital pediatric ER because nurses like her! I will not hesitate to bring one of my children here again.
