She was always meticulous with her clinical practice and timings, clear and honest in her communication, but most importantly, loving and empathetic in her approach. I was happy to leave my baby, my most prized and precious possession, with Emma whilst I showered or took a breath.
Being admitted to hospital with our baby girl at 4am, following 8 long hours in A&E, was overwhelming. Hungry, tired, shocked - it’s hard to be the best parent you can be in that state. Emma met us with warmth as the porter showed us to the ward. She’d prepared our bed and was ready for our arrival.
Her reassurance, diligence and care were second to none. She acknowledged our feelings and was open and honest about what to expect. After showing us around and helping us to gather our thoughts, she encouraged us to have a cup of tea and get some rest, knowing that what we were going through was exhausting.
Over the next 5 days, we had the pleasure of Emma caring for our daughter on multiple occasions. She was always meticulous with her clinical practice and timings, clear and honest in her communication, but most importantly, loving and empathetic in her approach. I was happy to leave my baby, my most prized and precious possession, with Emma whilst I showered or took a breath. As a first-time mum navigating an unexpected hospital admission, I was so grateful to have Emma’s support and I instantly knew I could trust her. She knew what was needed and got it done, first time, every time.
Not being from a medical background, trying to process and keep up with the important medical information was challenging. Emma listened without judgement to our questions and acted with empathy to help us understand. She was able to frame test results and medicine prescriptions in a way that we could understand and went out of her way to gather more information which was put into context with clarity. Even though she was clearly rushed off her feet, nothing felt like too much trouble, and we were made to feel important.
Emma was mentoring a student nurse throughout our visit. She was thorough in making sure the student understood what was happening, but also gave them the freedom to use their expertise and training in practice. It was fantastic to see Emma imparting her knowledge and skills to the next generation of nurses, guaranteeing excellent care for the future.
I can say with absolute certainty that our experience with Emma was not a one off. Every child and young person whom she was tending to on the ward received the same standard of care. This is clearly how she operates day in, day out. Visiting family members also commented on how special Emma’s care of our baby was. On the day of our discharge from the ward, Emma was working elsewhere in the hospital but made sure we had time to say goodbye, demonstrating the extent of her compassion and care.
Emma is a credit to the ward, the hospital trust, and the profession. She embodies the LTHT values. Our time in hospital was made happier, calmer and more bearable because of Emma and her phenomenal nursing colleagues.
