The family had long since gone home, but Bob then became his family.
Patient came in as a full arrest in the late afternoon. The family came and made tough decisions, and the patient was terminally weaned (extubated in anticipation of death). Our department was on BLS bypass because we were so busy that no rooms were available on the floor, and the patient was with us overnight into the next morning. The family had long since gone home, but Bob then became his family. Pastoral care was involved, and Bob got a Hospice consult moving so the patient could be more comfortable, all the meanwhile repeatedly going in to be with the patient so he wasn’t alone and managing his four other patients.  This is an exemplary example of empathy and patient care, and we appreciate his efforts to bring this patient dignity and comfort in the dying process.
