Brittni Branstutter has been a Critical Care RN here at the Lexington VA Healthcare System for 12 years. Throughout her career she has encountered many diverse situations in which she has blossomed. Brittni is one of our Staff Nurse Leads in the ICU and is our priority resource when questions or issues arise. Recently, Brittni was caring for a Veteran who was declining rapidly. After several days in the ICU, refractory VTACH despite AICD and multiple drips, the Veteran was not improving. The poor prognosis was difficult for the family, specifically the sister, to understand. Knowing that her brother did not want to be left on life support, she wanted to give him every chance possible to live a quality life. Brittni has experience in challenging decisions—with this knowledge, she was able to talk 1-on-1 with the family and comfort them during this trying time. Speaking from her memories, Brittni’s capability to empathize with all the fears, emotions, and anxieties the sister was feeling was put directly on the table. She spent a considerable period at the bedside and tended to the family’s every need, concern, and question including contacting the Chaplain for prayer. Compassionate, honest, direct care is what Brittni gave to this family—and they were overwhelmed with gratitude. The family made the ultimate decision to discontinue all pressers, compassionately extubate the Veteran, and allow him to expire naturally. The sister did not want her brother in pain anymore and Brittni ensured that the Veteran received optimal care during that short time. The sister was thankful to have such an attentive RN at the bedside to walk her through the most difficult decision she would ever have to make for someone she loves. The veteran was no longer in pain, and with Brittni’s guidance, she was able to bring him peace. We are certainly thankful for having Brittni as a part of our ICU team. Her knowledge and love for medicine is what keeps her at the bedside. She is an amazing asset to our critical care family.
