My wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor in late January of this year and underwent surgery for its removal at Christiana Hospital in February. After rehab at Bayhealth Hospital in Milford we returned home to await our first oncological consultation. In March she developed a severe headache and we went to the emergency department at Beebe's South Coastal facility. A scan showed some swelling in her brain and, based on advice from the surgeon's office, arrangements began for transport to Christiana Hospital. Christiana Hospital informed us that no bed was available and that we would have to wait at the emergency room. This became an almost three-day wait, during which the emergency department's staff made numerous calls to Christiana. We finally decided to go home and make contact with the surgeon's office. During this extremely stressful period an emergency room nurse named Natasha Merrick provided most of my wife's care. She was professional and compassionate. Understandingly, the emergency department was unable to provide regular food and other care one would have in a full hospital setting. Natasha, however, was fully aware of this and took it upon herself to make sure that all of my wife's needs for comfort were provided. She was patient with my wife's aphasia which made communication difficult. She kept us informed of the progress of getting her to Christiana. She even provided food on at least two occasions. While any hospital stay, let alone one in an emergency room setting, is a very stressful experience, Natasha's care and compassion coupled with her good humor made our experience as comfortable as possible. Over the past six weeks or so we have encountered many health care professionals, but none have shown the level of care as Natasha. She is truly unique and we are hopeful that she is recognized for it.
