She did nothing but go above and beyond the call of duty for me on my 2 days with her.
I would like to commend Taylor Barnard working on 4 West. She did nothing but go above and beyond the call of duty for me on my 2 days with her. I was in ICU for a week before coming to 4 West. I had an emergency Upper Endoscopy for a GI Bleed. Minutes before being transferred to 4 West a doctor in ICU informed me that the ultrasound they had taken showed I had a blood clot from a vein going into my liver. This upset me and made me nervous. When I arrived at 4 West I asked if I could shave and was told they would look into it. I didn’t hear back on that but when I asked Taylor the next day if I could shave my beard she provided a brand new electric razor right out of the box in 5 minutes. Looking a little better and feeling a little better, might seem like a small thing but it was a big deal for me. While on 4 West a doctor made a mistake and canceled my prescription which I was already using in ICU for Proventil. I caught pneumonia while in the hospital and I have been using this drug since I was 12 and have it at home at all times. Taylor got the doctor that canceled the prescription to see me and she said it was a mistake and she would fix it. Unfortunately later that day it had been about 24 hours without the medicine and I really needed it. I approached Taylor minutes before her 12 hour shift was ending and she said she was sorry but the doctor hadn’t fixed it in the system. Taylor didn’t go home. Instead she stayed late and hunted down the doctor and got me the medicine I needed. She really cares about her patients. That was just the beginning of what she did. Over 30 plus hours had gone by and I had heard nothing about this blood clot. I informed Taylor and she had another doctor meet with me. She ordered another ultrasound. Again, I heard nothing all day and got Taylor involved. The doctor came back and said it was a partial clot but I didn’t have the symptoms they said I should be having. I had no pain and no loss of weight. She couldn’t answer all my questions and informed me that Taylor was already in touch with the hematologist. He showed up and completely disagreed with putting me on blood thinner medication. I didn’t want to take this medicine if I didn’t have to because it can cause bleeding and I was in for a gastric bleed. The GI team said it was a health risk but it was a bigger risk not to take it as the clot could go to my lungs or brain. Once again I got Taylor involved, to later find out that both teams discussed my situation via email late into that night. The next day I was informed that I was to go on the blood thinner. Initially I refused but then relented. About a half second before I got the shot Taylor told the trainee to stop because she needed more information. Taylor sent more correspondence to both teams and they ordered an MRI for that night. While Taylor was off on Friday, the results came back showing there wasn’t a blood clot. If not for Taylor’s diligence I could have left the hospital on blood thinners for a clot that didn’t exist. She is an exceptional nurse and a phenomenal person that truly cares about her patients. I consider myself lucky to have such a great nurse go above and beyond to help me overcome a very stressful situation.
