Amanda gathered them all, saying it was time. They all knew the assignment, anywhere from decorating, painting nails, doing hair, or even managing the floor while the rest of the team was on wedding duty. It truly was a team effort. The best part of getting the bride ready was her repeatedly saying, "Do I look pretty?"
Recently, an RN approached Amanda and stated that her patient would like to get married today. Due to the patient's terminal illness, Amanda knew exactly what needed to be done. Amanda started immediately working with Case Management and Social Work. After calling the county clerk's office and speaking to several staff members regarding the situation and needs, it ended with the result that they were unable to "legally" marry under the county clerk's office. After this information, Amanda spent time talking to the patient, groom, and chaplain. It was decided to proceed with the wedding, regardless of legality. The couple loved each other regardless of legal status, and the patient wanted to say she was "married." And the planning began.

The primary RN was able to obtain the patient's favorite colors for the cake and flowers. Amanda called around to order a cake. The cake decorator stated it would normally be 24-hour notice for all orders, but Amanda explained the situation and the need for rush, and they were able to have the cake ready in time! Amanda wanted the patient to wear something other than the hospital gown. She and another RN went to the ER closet to find something else but were unsuccessful. Amanda didn't stop there. She remembered that Peds always has colorful gowns, so they went on a search for a purple gown and found a beautiful galaxy one! Amanda and team searched the unit for old decorations leftover from previous parties and used what could be found. The primary RN was able to get balloons and the remaining directions needed. The Manager was able to pick up the cake and flowers that Amanda had ordered. Lastly, Amanda was in search of a shirt for the groom, as he had not left the patient's side in days. Amanda was able to call her mother-in-law, and she brought a white dress shirt for the groom.

Amanda was in awe of her team! Anything that she asked, they were there. An hour prior to the wedding, Team OPC came through! Amanda gathered them all, saying it was time. They all knew the assignment, anywhere from decorating, painting nails, doing hair, or even managing the floor while the rest of the team was on wedding duty. It truly was a team effort. The best part of getting the bride ready was her repeatedly saying, "Do I look pretty?" We listened to her favorite songs that reminded her of her hubby-to-be until she found the perfect one. We played songs during the wedding and after. After the wedding, we provided the family with snacks and drinks - along with cake. It wasn't much, but it was everything to the patient.
