A husband and wife were admitted together, both with long stays. Their medical journeys diverged, they became separated, the wife becoming Briann Logan's patient on the cardiac unit, the husband a patient on the post-surgical unit. Due to insurance coverage, one was to be discharged to an adult foster care, the other to a skilled nursing facility. When the wife got the news that her husband would be discharged in the morning, emotions swelled. Briann helped arrange what would likely be a final goodbye. The goodbye got a bit tense with overwhelming emotions. Briann, always full of compassion, enthusiasm to provide outstanding patient care, and a knack for noticing the smallest details, already knew things that brought this patient small joys. Briann brought in ice cream floats she made from the nutrition room, brought in a radio from the hold rooms, reminding them they loved to sing and dance together. Briann expertly, as she often does, relaxed the room. The sterile hospital room, filled with dance moves that the couple joined in on, bursts of songs they smiled while singing, and questions of their first moments together as a couple, reminding them of the reason for intense emotions. This couple spent their last moments together with Briann pulling up their wedding song on her phone, a final dance. I have worked with Briann for years, this is just one of the countless moments she has shined in, always to the benefit of our patients. May we all be so lucky as to have a nurse like Briann in our vulnerable moments of life.
