Rae-Jean Peterson's shift on the medical/surgical unit began with red flags as she received the report. Concerned that her patient was bleeding, she promptly went to assess her patient, which started her night of uneasiness, worry, alarm, frustration, hope, and finally relief. Rae-Jean did find her post operative patient to be bleeding. She notified her coworkers and the on-call physician. She continuously monitored the patient and frequently updated the physician. She collaborated with the team to develop strategies to manage the bleed and escalated concerns appropriately. As her patient continued to decline, Rae-Jean persisted in her advocacy by insisting the physician evaluate the patient. This step led to the patient receiving the life-saving treatment he required. Documentation is stellar and thoroughly reflects the care provided. Rae-Jean exemplified quality in the nursing process during this most memorable shift.
