We talked and laughed about our kids, our dogs, just family and life in general. By the time I tried to sleep for a while, I had come out of the depression I was having; Nurse Jennifer reminded me that no matter how hard the PT would be in front of me, it would all be worth it once I stood again.
I am a 51 year old professional who is confined to a wheelchair after a terrible right knee surgery. I was having terrible pain and depression when in the hospital, as you can imagine, and the Nurse Jennifer came on shift. Right away she had a glowing smile on her face, very clearly well spoken and intelligent was just her non-verbal persona. Once she and the nurse she replaced were finished, she came to my room and reviewed all the meds I was going to be given during her shift as ordered and also the ones that were by request only. She took the time to explain to me the reason why I was taking a certain drug and how I would benefit from using said drug. After that, she asked if I needed anything out of my locker, put away a couple of dirty items I had by my bedside, got my a small basin to organize my personal hygiene belongings, giving me much more room with the little amount I had and last stepped out and brought back a new gown and clean washcloth all without me asking. All the while asking if I was okay and how she was here to help. As the night went on, she would have to come in the room to check my vitals, change my bandage, and bring meds, and each time, we would engage in conversation. Some were about her job, my position before my injury, we talked and laughed about our kids, our dogs, just family and life in general. By the time I tried to sleep for a while, I had come out of the depression I was having; Nurse Jennifer reminded me that no matter how hard the PT would be in front of me, it would all be worth it once I stood again. She was very positive about my future and you could very much tell she meant it, sincerely. I had been in the hospital for three days before I had Nurse Jennifer, and just to be clear, all the nurses were excellent and thorough, but Nurse Jennifer just had a way of doing and explaining things that I did not even ask for. When her shift was over, it was almost like saying goodbye to a family member she had been so protective and caring. As I previously noted above, PRMC has a great staff with excellent knowledge, but if they were all like Nurse Jennifer, you may have check-ins that really were there for the pampering. I now know that Nurse Jennifer is not only a great nurse but has a truly caring heart, which patients depend upon in general during bad times if admitted into a hospital. Nurse Jennifer is definitely a 5-star rating.
