In the darkest moments of this mother's life, she trusted and confided in a nurse that she had only just met.
We recently had a very special patient and family in our PICU. It was a sad and stressful case for all of us, but nothing we felt could compare to the despair and anguish endured by the mother of this patient. Her beautiful, happy 8-month-old baby was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, became comatose, and was eventually pronounced brain dead. His mother sat by his bedside and helplessly watched as he deteriorated and became increasingly swollen, looking less and less like her precious little boy. The mother didn't have much support. She wasn't on good terms with her mother or grandmother and didn't have any other close family members. At the young age of 22 she had three other children at home to worry about. I knew I wanted to help her and provide her with some sort of assistance. She was often at her baby's bedside alone. That's when Kristi Lamarque stepped in. Even though it was her day off, she arrived on the unit within an hour, eager to help. She sat on the couch with this mother for hours just listening and giving her a shoulder to cry on. She had such an impact on this mother that mom wanted her to spend the night and be with her the entire next day. In the darkest moments of this mother's life, she trusted and confided in a nurse that she had only just met. This powerful human interaction will forever affect this patient’s life and the compassionate care that Kristi provided deserves to be recognized. Kristi continued to stay with this mom every day, helping her make footprints, cutting and saving a lock of his hair, and providing her with a memory box as a memento. She made sure this mom was able to hold and rock her dying baby. The parents made the incredibly brave and selfless decision to donate the baby's organs to LOPA. It was important to the mother that her baby have an Honor Walk on the way to the operating room. Kristi helped facilitate this and she was here for St. Tammany’s first ever pediatric organ procurement. Having Kristi here on the unit allowed us PICU nurses to focus on the critical and complicated care that this infant required. Her help was invaluable and all the nurses on Pediatrics and PICU agree that there is no one more deserving of recognition.
