We recently had a patient come into the ED that was newly diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. This individual required extensive diabetic education to include overview of diabetes, diet, glucose monitoring, medication administration, risk factors, s/s low and high blood sugar, etc. Unfortunately there was no diabetes educator available to see this patient prior to discharge from the Emergency Department, but the patient did not require admission to the hospital. They could only set up a virtual visit another day. Matthew Hill has a wealth of knowledge around diabetes due to his personal experience in addition to nursing experience. So, Matt decided to provide diabetic education to the patient prior to discharge. Matt even called the pharmacy to obtain all medications, lancets and monitoring equipment prior to the patient being discharged in order to incorporate all of this during his discharge education. Matt spent a great deal of time giving thorough instruction, including demonstration and return demonstration. Matt displayed empathy, kindness, concern and compassion for this patient undergoing a new and complex medical diagnosis with low health literacy to begin with. He certainly went above and beyond the call of duty.
