If Sarah had not helped out that late afternoon, my husband and I would have had to wait through the weekend for dismissal!
My husband had been struggling for weeks with an infection. We ended up at Boulder Community Hospital for our last of three hospital stays. We were eager to go home as most patients are, but even more so as we were expecting family for the holidays. The hospital staff seemed so busy, and the hospital was full. To be sent home, my husband needed to be checked by the wound care nurse who was knowledgeable about the wound pump, which wasn't working correctly!
Late Friday afternoon the doctor saw Nurse Young in the hospital. Sarah had come in on her day off as a special favor to another doctor. Her young family was at home trying to wait patiently for their mother to join them for their own holiday fun. When Dr. M asked Sarah to stop in and change the dressing on my husband's leg, evaluate the healing, as well as figure out why the pump wasn't functioning, she said she would be glad to. If Sarah had not helped out that late afternoon, my husband and I would have had to wait through the weekend for dismissal! We were both overjoyed when Sarah "bee-bopped" into our room in a cheerful, yet totally professional, way. She was filled with alacrity and thoroughly and expertly gave my husband the care he needed for us to be on our way home.
We had a two-hour-plus drive ahead of us and I was driving--me, a senior citizen whose husband usually did all the driving! Sarah got us on our way and we arrived at our home just before the sunset and dusk washed over our house and yard. Yay to all the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at BCH. Thank you to Dr. M (who I believe has also nominated Sarah for this DAISY Award) for caring about me and my husband enough to shake the earth to get us on our way home that day. And a huge salute of appreciation from us to Sarah Young for spending that 90 minutes with my husband while her young family was waiting for her to get home to them. We will always remember and appreciate Sarah. She is very good at her job and does her part in making BCH a caring and expertly run-hospital. Surely, The DAISY Award was initiated for healthcare professionals exactly like Nurse Young.
