As our leader, he has made many improvements to the morale and organizational structure at NHCH.
Captain Victor M. Diaz enlisted in the Navy in 1991 under the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program. Following recruit training and completion of BOOST, he attended Jacksonville University on a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship and received his bachelor’s degree in nursing and commission in 1996.
He began his career as a staff nurse on the Cardiothoracic and Telemetry unit at Naval Medical Center San Diego, California and departed in 1999, for his first overseas tour in Guam as a critical care nurse. In 2001, Diaz was competitively selected for the Navy Nurse Corps Anesthesia Program (NNCAP) and attended the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. He earned a master’s degree in 2003 and reported to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA for his utilization tour as a nurse anesthetist (CRNA).
Operationally, he has been deployed as a CRNA with the 2nd MLG, Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF-II). He served as the sole anesthesia provider on Fleet Surgical Team Six and completed deployments aboard the USS Bataan (LHD 5) and USS Nassau (LHA 4). Diaz has also served on humanitarian missions to Latin America aboard the USNS Comfort (T-AH 20).
Diaz has served in a variety of leadership positions, including director, division officer, chief nurse anesthetist, and department head at both small and large mainland and overseas military treatment facilities. Prior to assuming his current duties as commanding officer in June 2022, CAPT Diaz served as the executive officer for Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Beaufort where he oversaw the safe operations and effective health care delivery in support of 31,000 eligible beneficiaries that included Marines and sailors, military retirees and veterans living in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Diaz assumed command of Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Pearl Harbor in June 2022. His personal military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards) and various campaign and unit ribbons. He has also earned the Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer and Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer designations.
Since he assumed command at Naval Health Clinic Hawaii, CAPT Diaz has remained clinically active as a CRNA, providing anesthesia services to both Army and Marine Corps medical and dental facilities.
