One day in March, Derrick was performing his usual department duties on 6 East. The unit was extremely busy that day with some very sick patients. One of the patients happened to be coding, and many of the staff members were in the room trying to assist the patient. As Derrick normally does, he went down the hall to see if he could be of any assistance. As he was going down the hall, a visitor came out of a room and was choking. She was unable to speak or breathe. Derrick immediately went into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, which saved her life. If he hadn't gone down the hallway to assist with the coding, she may not have been found. To Derrick, it was all in a day's work, but to us, we think he is a hero.
