Zeel is an international student from India who arrived in the United States in 2019. She navigated nursing school while learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic. She faced a number of challenges in completing the program and experienced disappointment. She became out of sync with her original cohort of students and the order of program courses. She had to build new relationships with student groups repeatedly over the last three years. She has shared that there have been many ways in which she has felt like an outsider or excluded. Despite all those challenges, Zeel has come to class with a positive attitude every single day. She makes eye contact, smiles, and participates by sharing questions, ideas, and stories. She takes an interest in everyone and shows kindness to her fellow students. Where she could have become frustrated or discouraged, Zeel has taken every setback and challenge as a learning opportunity. Her clinical instructors have shared that she is equally as positive, loving and kind with her patients. Zeel shows respect and empathy for anyone who is struggling, including the faculty. She makes the most of every lecture, often speaking aloud as a spokesperson for group members who are shy or anxious about public speaking. She has grown in confidence as her language mastery and academic success has increased. And yet, she has this approachable, gentle, joyful spirit ---that is humble and full of fun. Any conversation with Zeel is a naturally therapeutic one. I am moved and incredibly proud of this young woman. Her passion for learning, natural curiosity, and deeply kind heart will be a gift to each of her patients and to this profession.
