Recently there was a disabled patient who lost their mother, unexpectedly, resulting in EMS bringing him to the ED. He ended up staying with us for over a week. Throughout that time, the staff treated him like their own. He did not have other family identified early on that would bring him clothing or stay with him at all. There were multiple staff who immediately began to provide him with clothing to wear and comfort items to help him adjust. He was non-verbal for the first few days, slowly the kindness brought out his personality and he began to interact more and more with staff. They made him feel at home by decorating his room, playing with him, and taking walks through the department. One staff member brought in his own guitar and played music and sang to him. One staff member provided a Bluetooth speaker so we could continue to play music he liked. Throughout the days, books, toys, crafts, and a willingness to be present with him continued on. We had 2 staff members who connected with him, continuing to come in outside of their scheduled shift to help settle him for bed, to help make him feel comfortable to rest, knowing that his routine that he had known for years came to an abrupt stop. Once there was respite care was arranged for him there were many tears as they packed him up and assisted him off to his new family. The story of how this patient lost his mother touched everyone's heart, and it showed every day, every team member.
