I am a resident physician, and not a patient, but this nurse cared for my patient and worked with me in a way that deserves to be honored. On my 28-hour shift, dealing with a difficult patient with high acuity and shifting medical needs. Tim was incredible. He was professional and supportive, checking in in increments for updates, doing exactly what I asked and offering to do more. He also kindly offered his own thoughts and wisdom. He could see I was exhausted and was working with very little help from other care team members, under high stress. He kept the patient safe by administering medications quickly, evaluating again and again. He was patient and optimistic to help transfer the patient to an appropriate unit, specifically the ICU. Even though this was a patient case where the patient's complaints didn't match his clinical picture at all, and anyone could have easily written off his complaints, Tim remained diligent and took it seriously. His confidence and commitment to patient care helped build my confidence in clinical decision-making, and he acted as a right hand. His experience influenced the patient and the team very positively. The way you treat one team member is the way you treat everyone, and if the patient realized the significance and value of Tim's support for his team, I think he would have written a nomination for Tim himself. Healing during AND after this stressful patient care event was possible because of Tim's practice as a nurse. Tim's respect for me and attentiveness was uplifting and gave me hope and built my faith in the power of the nursing profession, which should, by definition, earn him a DAISY Award. I will carry this patient care experience with me everywhere, as what was a truly difficult and unavoidable situation was turned into a beacon of hope. It will influence my practice forever, bringing love and joy to other patients' lives through this physician's respect for an excellent nurse.
