Bailee works as a nursing supervisor at ECU Health BFT. In the community hospital setting, this role is implemented similarly to a charge nurse on a floor in the medical center, but this nurse is responsible for the patient throughout, managing concerns/issues and ensuring staffing needs are met. These are just a few of the main roles/responsibilities.

One unspoken part of this nursing role is to advocate for patients. Each shift that Bailee works, she is in tune with what patients are being admitted to and the overall big-picture needs of patients in the units. Last week, she noticed that there was a pregnant patient in the ED lobby with elevated blood pressure. She spoke with the ED team and expressed her concerns about the patient's length of wait in the lobby. In all ED, patients are triaged utilizing an evidence-based system. This system does not take into account pregnancy-related conditions. Unfortunately, the ED was extremely busy with patients who had respiratory and cardiac concerns that take high priority within the triage system. This patient, in particular, had normal vital signs, except for an elevated blood pressure. During triage, this patient had labs drawn, and Bailee noticed abnormal labs that indicated HELLP syndrome in pregnancy. She immediately contacted the L&D department and ensured that the patient was triaged with their system. This patient was immediately taken for an emergent C-section. Because of Bailee's advocacy to get the patient the right treatment in the right place at the right time, she not only saved the patient's life, she saved the life of her unborn child. This is just one example of Bailee's clinical expertise, advocacy priorities, and overall excellence in the care she provides as a nurse.
