Nurses are heroes. Mine was Megan. During a time when I was extremely vulnerable, she demonstrated the Integrity of a true medical professional, unwavering and steadfast. Her calm demeanor and confidence served to ease my concerns and allowed me to get some rest despite the trials I had been through. Megan demonstrated her commitment to taking care of patients by coming up with a care plan for me and then making me feel as if it was a joint effort. Her ability to see clearly what I needed and then communicate those needs to the medical staff alleviated my dehydration and somewhat askew lactic acid values. Her drive for excellence is clear as she took the initiative to draw blood from me at 0400 instead of having to be prodded again when the lab personnel arrived. In a few words, after surgery, I felt anxious, helpless, restless, and exhausted, but I had a great nurse "in my corner"; is that not the epitome of advocacy? I never shared with her who I was, and yet I felt as if I was getting the respect afforded a VIP; I have a feeling she treats all her patients that way.
