Alanna Bowman has been the definition of an ideal nurse that embodies each of the core UHS values. Alanna provides excellent care to all of her patients, treating them with compassion, respect, and dignity. Alanna is also an amazing co-worker, going out of her way to assist with her team. She helped me get PRN wound orders in on a high-priority patient on her day off and outside work hours when I wasn't able to get access to my computer. She communicates regularly with all of her team and assists in providing the best possible patient care. She has taught, and will continue to teach, me so much about nursing, and I have become so much better of a clinician because of Alanna. She has been the perfect mentor to introduce me to the intricacies of home care. I cannot thank her enough. One moment that stands out to me the most is when we had a patient that had a drastic decline in function one morning and was unable to get up off her low chair in her bedroom. After calling 911, Alanna helped me get the patient up from the chair and into the bathroom, where Alanna helped dress the patient, prepare a hospital overnight bag for her with her phone, charger, and insurance cards, and then went downstairs and fixed her up a small snack as the patient hadn't eaten yet that day. Alanna stayed right by the patient's side until she was loaded into the ambulance, reassuring the patient that she was going to be just fine. At the patient's request Alanna went back into the house and made sure to turn off all her oxygen devices, and to lock all the doors. Alanna handled the entire situation with a cool and collected demeanor and put the patient at ease during a scary and stressful situation. It was very clear that the only thing on Alanna's mind was taking care of her patient the best she possibly could. I have many more similar stories such as this, where Alanna has stayed extra time at a house to make sure they were comfortable, or safe, or had all the resources they needed. She is very thorough with all of her assessments and documentation, and I have witnessed her first-hand ask for referrals for services a patient needed such as a cardiologist for a CHF patient that did not have a cardiologist following her. I have also witnessed her calling and making appointments, or checking up on canceled appointments for patients that were waiting for phone calls that never came. Alanna makes sure that nothing is missed and that each of her patients is taken care of in full. Alanna is the biggest patient-advocate for her patients and gives a voice to each one. Alanna has such a passion and drive for home care and for her patients and it is truly a beautiful thing to see. I cannot think of a better example of what a UHS Home Care nurse should be like. This recognition has been long overdue, and UHS is very lucky to have such an amazing nurse like Alanna. I know she will continue to positively impact the lives of all her patients and co-workers.
