Kelly knew she needed to get through to mom no matter what it took. Thanks to this nurse's perseverance and amazing passion for nursing and her patient, mom agreed with the plan of care and agreed to testing.
This nurse is amazing and goes above and beyond for her patients. She consistently advocates for her patients and ensures that they get the care that they need so that nothing is missed or overlooked, and she does not give up until she knows she's done everything she can. In my many years of working with her, I have witnessed several occasions, but I have one specific example in which I noticed her truly making a difference for her patient. On this particular day she had a very sick patient who needed a test with interventional radiology. The patient's mom kept refusing testing due to cultural and language barriers. This nurse and doctor tried various methods to interpret and explain things to her by the interpreter iPad, an in-person translator, and even different dialects with in-person translators. But nothing seemed to work to help mom understand what was going on with her child or the care that her child needed. Mom kept refusing testing and treatment, which could potentially be needed to save the patient's life. After two days of going above and beyond to try to convey to this mother the importance of the necessary testing, this nurse thought outside the box. She called me to see if I could come with her to talk to mom to see if I could try to create a connection with mom that she felt was missing. After two days of being unsure if her ability to communicate with mom was successful, even with various interpretation methods, she decided to approach the situation differently with another nurse who is fluent in the language. She never gave up trying to communicate with mom to get the testing done. It would have been easy for her to just think she had already tried her best and that there was nothing left she could do for the patient, but she knew she couldn't just do that. She knew she needed to get through to mom no matter what it took. Thanks to this nurse's perseverance and amazing passion for nursing and her patient, mom agreed with the plan of care and agreed to testing. This nurse literally saved this girl's life. The patient was diagnosed with a life-threatening tumor, but thanks to Kelly, she was able to receive the treatment that she needed and saved her life.
