Then she asked me about my friend, not in a medical way, but as a person. I was amazed that she took the time to get to know her.
I took my friend to the ER last year because she wasn't acting herself. She was suddenly mean and refused to eat or take her medicine. She was admitted to the 7th floor with sepsis from a bladder infection. They put a tube in her nose to give her medicine, which she promptly pulled out along with her IV. They put her in restraints and put all the tubes back in. The next night, Candace called me to ask some general questions about her health and history since she didn't have any family. She mentioned that my friend was hard of hearing, which she was, and asked if she spoke English, which she did. Then she asked me about my friend, not in a medical way, but as a person. I was amazed that she took the time to get to know her. Because of this, Candace was able to put together that my wonderful friend wasn't talking out of her head. She was speaking her native language, German. She made a full recovery and came home. Sadly, my beautiful friend has since passed away. I just want Candace to know how much that extra time and special touch of learning about the patient as a person instead of focusing on the medical presentation meant to us. I know I'll never forget her.
