The Pre-Op/PACU team highly deserves a "DAISY Team Award". The whole team has worked very hard to create the caring, healing environment in the fast paced pre-op, recovery area. The past few years, the team went through COVID along with every person in the hospital. They did not just work on a COVID unit, they came into work each day not knowing if they would be working in Pre-Op/PACU to care for surgical patients or be sent to a COVID floor. Multiple RN's volunteered to work SICU or MICU three to four days a week during that time. They also helped to open a COVID unit along with 2 North. There were multiple units that received a bonus for being a "COVID unit" but they were not included in this decision. During this time, the Pre-Op/PACU was going through construction and the team had to make multiple moves all while caring for patients. In September 2022, the same day surgery area closed and each staff member from SDS, Pre-Op, and PACU had to cross-train to learn each other's jobs in the midst of construction. At that time we opened a Pre-Op unit on the prior Step Down unit while construction continued. On that first day, the new IV's were circulated to learn and use. We also began using the new medication Pyxis the same day (with over 30 patients to Pre-Op). The whole team continued to strive for excellence and always cared for patients, family, and each other with loving kindness. The support for each other as a team is remarkable. A short time after closing the SDS area, the team along with 2 North created a temporary 23-hour surgical stay in the prior SDS unit for surgical patients and post-cardiac catherization patients. Each person needed to pick up extra shifts to staff this unit. Each person picked extra shifts to do so and continued to give the best care with a smile to patients and families. When all of the construction and moves were complete, the Pre-Op/PACU team had to continue to learn and adjust. They had new hemodynamic monitors that had to be programmed multiple times, patient care stock supplies had to be adjusted to the unit's needs, learning where needed supplies were stocked and a new work flow. Many people do not understand what the staff in the Pre-Op/PACU areas do. The unit is open 24/7 and must be staffed at all times. If there is an illness for a staff member, someone needs to cover from our unit. They have many skills and care for newborns to over 100 years old. The Pre-Op area is the final pause for patient safety before the patient goes into the OR. The nurse has the responsibility to ensure that everything is correct as the patient advocate for their safety. They do this while also comforting the patients and family to make them feel safe and making sure that they go into the OR on time. In PACU, the team not only cares for surgical patients from the OR, they care for any patient that has anesthesia. This includes IR, code strokes, MRI, CT, some endoscopy, on occasion even some cath. lab patients or birthing suite patients will visit PACU. This team does amazing work and the patients love them. I have had multiple patients say how  "caring each nurse is" and they are "amazed at the teamwork."  This includes the HUC's, PCT's, and surgical lounge liaisons. I have heard family members say that "everybody works so well together" and "everyone is so kind from the time we came in." Unfortunately, due to having anesthesia, the patients do not always remember everything that happened in the unit after they go to the floor or are discharged home. The team does not receive a DAISY nomination often. The team tries to extend kindness and support to other units in the hospital also. An example is when RSV was prominent recently, the team donated snacks and made baskets of goodies to bring to the units that were working hard to help these patients. Some of these units included Respiratory, PICU, ER, PEDS, ect. This is just one act of kindness that the Pre-Op/PACU team has done. I have so much gratitude to be a part of such a caring team! Our team is a FAMILY and we make sure to take care of each other and for those in need extending caring love and healing daily. The Pre-Op/PACU team is truly a group of healing angels sent to care for the world and spread joy!  They deserve the recognition for all of the good that they do.
