Mark's energy and compassion is contagious. He is indeed proactive.
Mark Caccavale has been with the VA for just over a year and he immediately took the reigns and led 6B from a nearly empty ward with very little permanent staff to a fully functional unit. Mark was able to speak life into 6B, promoting positivity, fellowship, and teamwork. Mark was sure to include everyone in the rebuild of 6B. His unifying strategy garnered interest in Float staff, as they wanted to become a part of the 6B team. Mark's energy and compassion is contagious. He is indeed proactive. During open discussion, he encourages staff to voice concerns as a group and respects others' attempts to problem-solve. Our ideas become new projects almost immediately. I love that he trusts 6B's nursing staff to be innovative and autonomous. This means a lot to me on a personal level because, until I became employed at the Syracuse VA, I felt like my ideas were not promoted. Mark proves that he understands how to shape culture and promote growth amongst a new group. I admire Mark's humility. He lets us know that he is still learning the "VA way" and is always open to feedback as to how he is performing. When I am hard on myself after a tough day, Mark helps me look at positive moments captured during the shift and reflects on how we can learn and move forward. He also reminds me that these are opportunities for educating others. This humbling experience becomes empowering. He does this for others as well, asking what barriers were encountered and utilizing the hospital resources to obtain needed equipment or education. 6B is very lucky to have Mark as a Nurse Manager. I feel like our unit has experienced a rebirth. As we continue to grow our team, I am very optimistic. Thank you, Mark.
