She gained his trust through her compassionate care and her positive personality.
Our 81-year-old father was a patient of SGH HHC on different occasions, for wound care, to HHC, to hospice. The first nurse to see my dad was Kayla. She was always so polite, our dad always looked forward to Kayla's visits, they got along so well, which was important to us. Our dad did not always have a good day, but once Kayla would come, she would brighten his day. Kayla was always so knowledgeable in everything she did, whether it was packing his wound or changing his foley. My dad was very old-fashioned, so when it came to getting his foley changed, in the beginning, he was mortified and embarrassed. But after just one visit with Kayla, he felt comfortable. She would talk with him and always kept him at ease. She gained his trust through her compassionate care and her positive personality.

She always answered all our questions, and if she didn't have an answer for us, she would search for one. When the time came for our dad to be on Hospice, my dad was very sad, but still in good spirits. When he found out the nurse would once again be Kayla, it made him happy. Kayla started coming by as she was training another nurse. As we watched Kayla and the way she cared for our father, she showed such care and compassion, and to us, as we observed, she was instilling those values in her trainee. My dad passed, and we can say he passed peacefully with all our gratitude to this wonderful nurse.
