She stopped me to check on my father and ask how he was doing and was legitimately happy when I told her that because of their fast actions he is going to be fine.
I received a call from my mom that my dad was having a heart attack and was going to the ER. I immediately left work which is across the street at MUSC and came to the VA. I was greeted by a nice and wonderful nurse. She said your dad is in good hands and he’s in the cath lab, the EKG showed some funny rhythms. She walked me to the ICU and explained what was happening, and said she would call the cath lab and let them know I was in the waiting room. She was so sweet and kind. My dad got out of cath lab and wanted a few things brought to him, and as I was leaving, I saw this little old lady fall to the ground outside of the emergency room. I ran to the lady and checked on her. She stated she thought she was having a stroke. I ran back inside the ED and said, “This lady fell and thinks she’s having a stroke.” So, who comes running around the corner but the same nurse who was so helpful with my father! We ran outside, gathered some help and got this little lady inside to get the care she needed. You would think the story ends there, but as I was leaving for the second time, I guess this sweet human was off for the night, and I ran into her as I was going to my car. She stopped me to check on my father and ask how he was doing and was legitimately happy when I told her that because of their fast actions he is going to be fine. I am a nurse and previously have worked in an emergency room, and I know how chaotic and hard it can be, but I was so amazed at the care my father got between being triaged to diagnosed and cathed in less than two hours. This nurse recognized his signs and symptoms and gathered all the needed medical personnel to save my dad’s life, and I will eternally be grateful to her and all those who cared for him. I know my dad can be a lot. Shelia was amazing; she exemplifies what it means to be a nurse not only to her patients but also to the families.
